Book Corner: Go Away Big Green Monster, by Ed Emberley

The predictable pattern and fun design make this a fun book to read together.  Pause to see if your child can fill in what new face part has appeared on each page and have them be the ones to tell the parts to “Go Away!”.  With a little encouragement, your child will gain confidence and will be “reading” this book independently.  This is also a great opportunity to talk about colors, shapes, and sizes.  You could even decorate your own green monster sugar cookies, talking about the shape and color of the candy you use for the face. So READ, ENJOY, and don’t get scared!!!

READ, READ, READ!

In my day-to-day interactions with families, I am often asked what more can be done at home to promote a child's speech and language development.  I recently read an article which again backed up my number one answer: Read!

Studies show that there is no more important activity for preparing your child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together:
   1. Reading aloud to children creates a lifetime interest in reading.
   2. Reading to young children extends their attention spans.
   3. Reading aloud to children aids in language and vocabulary development.
   4. As you read aloud, the power of a child’s imagination is strengthened.
   5. Reading aloud helps build a child’s comprehension.
   6. Last, but certainly not least, read-aloud time is great one-on-one bonding time.

So fill daily story times with a variety of books. Be consistent, be patient, and enjoy the magic!
